ATTACK ON MINISTER: NORTH WEST YOUTHS MARCH AGAINST VIOLENCE, DEMAND REPATRIATION OF ATTACKERS

Youths from the North West Region staged a peaceful protest in Bamenda on Friday March 14, 2025, condemning recent violent attacks on the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education and the Cameroonian Ambassador to Belgium. Organized by the Cameroon National Youth Council (CNYC), the march drew hundreds of participants who marched from Customs Junction to the North West Governor’s office, chanting slogans like “No to barbarism” and brandishing placards advocating peace and national unity.

CNYC North West President Mekom Samuel Taleh addressed the Secretary General of the Governor’s office, distancing the region’s youth from the attacks. “North West youths are peaceful. We don’t want any act of vandalism against our people,” he emphasized, urging the Belgian government to repatriate 21 suspects linked to the attacks none of whom are from the North West to undergo Cameroon’s Moral Civic Rearmament (REAMORCE) program.

Placards highlighted themes of stability and development, including: • “Boyo: All we want is a peaceful environment to contribute to the growth of our nation Cameroon” • “Donga Mantung: All youths must be players in building an emergent Cameroon” • “Ngoketunjia: Give a red card to anything that hinders our country’s stability and economic growth”

Saidouna Moussa, Secretary General of the North West Governor’s office, praised the youths’ “republican spirit” and commitment to peace. “The Governor encourages you to continue fostering peace and progress,” he stated, assuring that their request would be relayed to higher authorities. The protest underscores tensions in a region grappling with the broader Anglophone crisis, which has disrupted education and heightened security risks.

While the youths’ message aligns with calls for stability, the ongoing conflict continues to pose challenges to youth-led initiatives for peace and development. The attacks in Belgium, which occurred on February 28 and May 3, 2025, targeted high-profile Cameroonian officials, sparking nationwide condemnation. The North West youths’ march reflects a growing trend of grassroots movements advocating for nonviolent conflict resolution amid Cameroon’s complex socio-political landscape.

Mekom Samuel Taleh stressed that the initiative could help “teach youths that there are peaceful ways to solve problems.” The absence of North West natives among the 21 suspects highlights regional dynamics, with some observers questioning whether the protest serves to deflect blame or genuinely promote unity. Regardless, the event underscores the critical role of youth in shaping Cameroon’s future a theme echoed in placards urging young people to “stay clear of hate speech, violence, and moral decadence.”
