Rising Insecurity in Bafut Raises Fresh Concerns Over Escalating Conflict

Fresh violence in Bafut Subdivision in Cameroon's North-West Region has heightened fears over the worsening security situation, reinforcing concerns that civilians remain trapped in a volatile conflict despite renewed calls for peace and reconciliation. The latest clashes come just days after the Pope's visit to Bamenda, which many residents had hoped would inspire dialogue and mark a turning point toward lasting peace in the conflict-affected region. 

Weapons seized by separatists from government forces 

Instead, the resurgence of violence has underscored the fragile security environment and the continuing risks faced by local communities. According to local sources, three Cameroonian soldiers were killed during an attack reportedly carried out by separatist fighters commonly known as "7 Kata" in Bujong Quarter, Bafut, on the night of May 31 extending into the early hours of June 1, 2026. The incident reportedly triggered a large-scale military response as security forces launched operations across the area in pursuit of the attackers. 

Sources familiar with the operation said approximately ten suspected separatist fighters were killed during the ensuing confrontations. The exchange of gunfire is also reported to have claimed the lives of five civilians who were allegedly caught in the crossfire, while three others sustained serious injuries.

Community members say the civilian casualties have deepened anxiety among residents who continue to bear the consequences of the protracted conflict. Local sources further indicated that two individuals suspected of supporting the Southern Cameroons cause were arrested during security operations conducted after the clashes. The latest incident has left many residents living in fear, with movement significantly reduced as families remain indoors to avoid possible renewed fighting.

Witnesses described an atmosphere of uncertainty and panic, with concerns that further military operations or retaliatory attacks could occur at any time. Community members who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed frustration over the persistent insecurity and the absence of a durable political solution to the conflict. Many said they now live under constant fear, uncertain of when violence could erupt again. 

The Anglophone crisis continues to pose one of Cameroon's most significant security challenges, with recurrent clashes between government forces and armed separatist groups contributing to displacement, economic hardship, disruption of education, and an ongoing humanitarian crisis across the North-West and South-West regions. As Bafut recovers from the latest violence, the incident serves as another reminder that the security situation remains highly fragile. For many residents, hopes for peace continue to be overshadowed by the reality of recurring armed confrontations and the ever-present threat to civilian lives.
